A thoughtful cleaning checklist for moving day

Moving brings plenty of decisions. A simple cleaning checklist can give the final walkthrough a little structure, whether you are handing over the keys or getting a new home ready for your first evening.

Plan around the move

Choose a time when the rooms will be as clear as possible. Keep your cleaning kit separate from the items being packed.

Check any move-out requirements with your landlord, agent, or property manager. Your checklist should reflect the condition of the space, its materials, and any agreed handover instructions.

Start in the kitchen

  • Empty cupboards and drawers, then clean the accessible interiors.
  • Wipe countertops using the care guidance for their material.
  • Clean accessible appliance surfaces according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Check the sink, taps, and the floor around the base of cabinets.

Leave appliances safely connected or disconnected as required for the move. Ask for help with heavy items and unfamiliar maintenance tasks.

Walk through the other rooms

In the bathroom, check the vanity, mirror, sink, and accessible fixtures. In bedrooms and living rooms, look at the floors, shelves, window ledges, and the places that were hidden by everyday belongings.

Work from one room to the next and cross items off as you go. If several people are helping, give each person a clear area.

Save time for the final walkthrough

After the last boxes are out, take one more look through the space. Check for forgotten items, remove ordinary rubbish, and make sure any doors and windows are left as agreed.

For an extra pair of experienced hands, our move-in and move-out cleaning service can help you prepare for your next chapter. Tell us about your move, and the Burr team will help you plan the cleaning around it.

A little care. A whole lot of clean.
